Top 10 Tips for Traveling to Nosara
Things I always forget when coming back to Nosara.
- You don’t need many clothes here. A bathing suit and a cover-up and a pair of flips will get your far. (AGAIN.. I brought 4 summer sweaters for the 4 months when 1 would do). PS: It’s hot. Travel in layers. That last leg to Nosara can be long when you’re (I mean, “I’m”) in a cashmere sweater, jeans, socks and boots.
- The sun is fierce. Bring hats and sunnies. 👓
- The roads are dirt and also unkept. You’re likely to see a moped, bicyclist, at least one tuk tuk, and two surfers in bathing suits & boards, and cars all swerving on the road to avoid the potholes.
- I never really knew the smell of molasses until I got down to Nosara. Acrid, sweet, weird. I like it.
- About those molasses? The dirt roads are sprayed with molasses to keep the dust down. Plan your shoes accordingly.
- Toilet paper does not go into the toilet. REPEAT. toilet paper does not go in the toilet. It usually takes me a few times to remember and change the pattern. When I do, I wonder why we flush our TP in the into the sewer/septic system in the USA? We know baby wipes and tampons can clog household and town-wide systems… Once you get used to it, it’s easy.
- There are less options here. With less options, I seem to need less stuff. With less stuff, I Realize it’s more about me and stuff it’s just an encumbrance.
- Going to the grocery store is always a mystery. Everything is packaged.
- Bring a flashlight. Sunset is a magic part of every day, with as many people as possible gathering at the beach. But when it gets dark; lights are out.
- Petty theft is a real thing. On the kitchen table of your rental. At the beach when you go swimming. Don’t leave your phones/cameras/valuables unattended.
